Frequently Asked Questions

Got a question? We probably have the answer.

What do I need to self-host Gibberly?
You need a computer (Windows, Mac, or Linux) with a modern browser, a microphone or audio connection to your sound desk, and an Azure account with Speech AI and Web PubSub services provisioned. Technical familiarity with running a Node.js application is helpful. Full instructions are in the GitHub repository.
Is our congregation eligible for the Microsoft Azure nonprofit grant?
Most registered nonprofits qualify — including churches, charities, and faith-based organizations. You need a current nonprofit registration in your country (e.g., 501(c)(3) in the US). Apply at nonprofit.microsoft.com. Approval typically takes a few business days. The grant provides $2,000/year in Azure credits, which covers most or all Gibberly running costs.
Where is our data stored, and is it GDPR-compliant?
Gibberly processes audio through Azure Cognitive Services. Microsoft's Azure is GDPR-compliant and offers data residency in European regions. Audio is streamed and processed in real time — it is not stored by default. Translated text is delivered over Azure Web PubSub and is not persisted. When you self-host, you control your own Azure region and data settings. For the hosted service, we configure Azure in the EU region by default.
